The following are facts about seahorses: Despite being endangered, millions of wild seahorses are captured for commercial purposes annually. Their largest destination is the traditional Chinese medicine industry, where dried seahorses are used to treat asthma, arthritis, impotence and bedwetting, in addition to inducing labor. A kilogram of dried seahorses can sell for thousands in Hong Kong at prices comparable to precious metals. The second-largest destination for dried seahorses is souvenir shops.

Seahorses are one of the slowest-moving of all fish; to compensate, their eyes move independently and they can change color. While only about one in a thousand seahorses make it to adulthood, those that do often form pair bonds and engage in elaborate, long-term mating rituals. This results in a transformative male pregnancy, sometimes yielding broods of up to 2,500. Though its fossil record is limited, a recent study found the seahorse genome to be the most rapidly evolving fish genome of any on record.

The Latin name for seahorse is “hippocampus,” which is also the name of a region deep in the brain crucial to the formation of memories, learning and emotion. This is our new album. It is also a movie. We hope you enjoy it.
